QR are codes are handy but are they safe? Depends on the website - that's why it's good to check where the QR code wants to send you before you go there. Educate yourself.
If you have a website and don't want to pay a url shortener - you could host your own. That way you have "domain sovereignty" with your own content and linking increasing your reputation - and maybe even lowering costs if you've been paying for link shorteners (which are becoming less trusted as the general public becomes more wary.)
